Brief Introduction to Saw Palmetto Extract

1. Plant Source

      Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), also known as Serenoa, is a palm - like plant that grows in the southeast of the United States. Its fruits are reddish - brown and usually about 1 - 2 centimeters in size. These fruits are the main parts for extracting the active ingredients. 

 2. Main Chemical Components

     Its extract is rich in fatty acids. The most important ones are saturated and unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid, lauric acid, and myristic acid. It can inhibit the activity of androgen receptors in prostate tissue and reduce the stimulation of prostate cells by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), thus alleviating the symptoms of dysuria such as frequent urination, urgent urination, and incomplete urination caused by prostate hyperplasia. For example, in some clinical observations, the number of nocturia of some BPH patients decreased after using preparations containing saw palmetto extract. 

     Anti - inflammatory Effect: Due to its components such as phytosterols, the saw palmetto extract has anti - inflammatory properties. It can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors and reduce the inflammatory response of tissues. This may also have an adjuvant therapeutic effect on some inflammation - related diseases, such as prostatitis.
