1.Structural and compositional differences
Common Glutathione:
Usually refers to reduced glutathione (GSH), a tripeptide composed of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine, which is a naturally occurring antioxidant in cells. It has a relatively simple chemical structure and exists as a free small molecule in aqueous solution.
Liposomal glutathione:
It is a preparation of glutathione encapsulated in liposomes. Liposomes are vesicles that resemble the structure of cell membranes and are composed primarily of a phospholipid bilayer. Glutathione is encapsulated in the inner aqueous phase of this liposome or embedded in the lipid bilayer.
2.Differences in absorption and bioavailability
Regular Glutathione:
After oral administration of plain glutathione, it faces multiple challenges in the gastrointestinal tract. Stomach acid and various digestive enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract may degrade glutathione, resulting in its lower bioavailability. For example, in the acidic environment of the stomach, glutathione's chemical bonds may be broken, rendering it partially inactivated before it reaches the intestinal absorption site. Moreover, due to its high hydrophilicity, the absorption efficiency of plain glutathione through intestinal mucosal cells is limited.
Liposomal glutathione:
The liposome structure protects glutathione from the harsh environment of the gastrointestinal tract. The phospholipid bilayer of liposomes resists the catabolic effects of gastric acid and digestive enzymes, allowing glutathione to reach absorption sites such as the small intestine intact. At the same time, the structure of liposomes is similar to cell membranes, which makes it easier to fuse with or be taken up by intestinal mucosal cells. For example, liposomes can enter cells through endocytosis, which results in efficient delivery of encapsulated glutathione to the cell interior, improving the absorption efficiency and bioavailability of glutathione.
3.Summary of the advantages of liposomal glutathione
Better absorption effect:
Liposomal glutathione can effectively overcome the problem of poor oral absorption of ordinary glutathione, through the protection and promotion of the absorption effect of liposomes, so that more glutathione into the blood circulation and play a role.
Higher bioavailability:
It can deliver glutathione to the cells efficiently, which improves the utilisation efficiency of glutathione in the body, allowing its physiological functions such as antioxidant and detoxification to be better performed.
Long-lasting effect:
The slow-release properties of liposomes allow glutathione to maintain effective concentrations over a longer period of time, providing the body with sustained antioxidant and other physiological support, such as continued fight against free radical damage.
Enhanced Stability:
Liposomal glutathione is more stable during production, storage and transport, which facilitates quality control and long-term preservation of the product.
