Ashwagandha- Relieve Stress & Anxiety

2024-07-02

Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng (Ashwagandha), is also called winter cherry, withania somnifera. Most uses of ashwagandha are integrative, but some research suggests that Ayurvedic plants like ashwagandha may be a source of ingredients for specific health uses (Bredesen, 2012). Ashwagandha contains alkaloids , steroid lactones, withanolides and iron, alkaloids have sedative, analgesic, and lowering blood pressure functions. The sedative effect of ashwagandha is used to induce sleep. If you suffer from anxiety, insomnia, dreaminess, depression, etc., you will sleep well after taking it, which is better than anti-anxiety or anti-depressant drugs. In Indian herbal medicine, it is mainly used to nourish and strengthen the body. It is used in Indian medicine just like ginseng is used in Chinese herbal medicine.

It can improve vitality, especially when working overwork or mental fatigue, to restore energy , has a significant effect on chronic fatigue syndrome. The potential effects of ashwagandha that have been demonstrated by modern science include: anti-anxiety, improvement of high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, chest pain, coronary  heart  disease, protection of nerves and memory, and anti-cancer.

People in today's society are facing various pressures in life. Ashwagandha, as a solution to relieve stress and help sleep, has promoted the continuous surge in the market demand for this adaptive raw material.

Ashwagandha is world-famous for treating stress and anxiety. It possesses an adaptogen, a substance that helps the body cope with stress. This helps control stress mediators, including heat shock proteins (Hsp70), stress alcohols, and stress-activated c-Jun N terminator inhibitor (JNK-1). Also reduces activity in the hypothalamic pituitary-persistent (HPA) axis, a system in the body that regulates stress responses.

In one small study, people who took ashwagandha extract for eight weeks significantly reduced perceived stress and levels of the stress hormone cortisol compared to those who took a placebo. What's more, participants who took ashwagandha supplements also experienced improved sleep quality compared to the placebo group.

Another study found that people who took 240 mg of ashwagandha extract daily for 60 days experienced significantly less anxiety than those who received a placebo.

Outcomes were measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, and hormonal changes in cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) and testosterone. Ashwagandha intake was associated with reductions in morning cortisol (P < .001) and stress scales (P = .004). These studies found that supplementation of ashwagandha, an herb traditionally used to reduce stress and enhance well-being, can help relieve stress and anxiety.

In another study, researchers looked at the effects of ashwagandha on 66 schizophrenia patients with depression and anxiety.

The study found that participants who took 1,000 mg of ashwagandha extract daily for 12 weeks had less depression and anxiety than those who took a placebo. Other research has found that taking ashwagandha may help improve overall symptoms and perceptions of stress in people with schizophrenia. High-pressure adults who took 600 mg of ashwagandha extract daily for 60 days reported a 77% reduction in depressive symptoms, while the placebo group reported a 5% reduction.

Although ashwagandha has some antidepressant effects, it is recommended for those with depression-related symptoms to consult a healthcare professional for additional help or treatment.

Ashwagandha has many benefits, but it’s not suitable for everyone. It may have some side effects, including:

  • upset stomach

  • nausea

  • Lethargy

In some severe cases, ashwagandha use may also cause rapid heartbeat and allergic reactions. These side effects are often caused by taking too high a dose, such as more than 6,000 mg of root powder or 1,500 mg of extract.

Everyone has different tolerance levels. You can take ashwagandha in the short term to help you regulate anxiety and stress, but it is recommended to stop using it after about 3 months.

Inapplicable groups include:

  • pregnant woman

  • People with autoimmune diseases

  • People with overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

  • prostate cancer patients

Ashwagandha is not recommended for the above groups of people.
