Liposomal quercetin with higher bioavailability

2025-02-14

Liposomal quercetin is a new type of preparation formed by encapsulating quercetin in a liposomal structure. Compared with ordinary quercetin, it has many advantages in terms of solubility, bioavailability, stability and targeting. The details are as follows:

1. Better solubility

   - Ordinary quercetin: Due to the presence of multiple phenolic hydroxyl groups in its molecular structure, hydrogen bonds are easily formed between these hydroxyl groups, resulting in strong intermolecular forces, which makes its solubility in polar solvents such as water poor. This limits its application in some aqueous media. For example, it has poor dispersibility in aqueous solutions and is difficult to dissolve uniformly in the aqueous environment of the organism.    Liposomal quercetin Liposomes have an amphiphilic structure, and their phospholipid bilayer can encapsulate quercetin inside, thereby improving the solubility of quercetin. This enables quercetin to disperse better in aqueous solutions and makes it easier to be transported in the organism and play its role.2. Higher bioavailability   - Ordinary quercetin: After oral administration, it is easily affected by gastric acid, digestive enzymes, etc. in the gastrointestinal tract. At the same time, due to its poor solubility, its absorption efficiency is low and its bioavailability is usually low, generally less than 10%.    Liposomal quercetin: Liposomes can protect quercetin from the destruction of the gastrointestinal environment, enabling it to be absorbed into the blood circulation more completely. In addition, liposomes have a similar structure to cell membranes and are more likely to fuse with cells or be taken up by cells, thereby increasing the cellular uptake rate of quercetin and significantly improving its bioavailability. Some studies have shown that the bioavailability of liposomal quercetin can be several times higher than that of ordinary quercetin.3. Enhanced stability    Ordinary quercetin: It is relatively unstable in chemical properties and is prone to oxidation, degradation and other reactions under the influence of environmental factors such as light, heat and oxygen, resulting in a decrease in its activity.    Liposomal quercetin: After being encapsulated by liposomes, it is isolated from the external environment, reducing the influence of factors such as light, heat and oxygen on quercetin, thereby improving the stability of quercetin. It can maintain its biological activity for a long time, which is beneficial to storage and transportation.4. Targeting ability    Ordinary quercetin: It lacks targeting in the body. After entering the human body, it will be widely distributed in various tissues and organs and is difficult to specifically accumulate in the lesion site. This may lead to certain side effects on other normal tissues while exerting therapeutic effects.    Liposomal quercetin: By modifying the surface of liposomes, they can be made to have targeting ability, specifically recognize and bind to specific targets on the surface of diseased cells or tissues, achieve targeted drug delivery, enable quercetin to accumulate in the lesion site, improve the therapeutic effect, and at the same time reduce damage to normal tissues.5. Reduced toxic and side effects    Ordinary quercetin: Due to its wide distribution in the body, it may cause certain toxic and side effects on some normal tissues and organs when the effective therapeutic dose is reached.    Liposomal quercetin: Its targeting ability can make the drug play a role in the lesion site, reduce its distribution in non-target tissues, thereby reducing toxic and side effects to a certain extent and improving the safety and tolerability of the drug.
